The following post is not sponsored by ConvertKit, but it does contain affiliate links that pay me a commission when you purchase through them. As always, thank you for your support!
I used to hear it all the time and roll my eyes: “you have to build your email list”, “build your email list from day 1” and similar thoughts. I’d think, “well, that’s out since I didn’t even have an email list for years when I started blogging”.
And boy what a mistake that was.
Your email list is one of the only things that YOU control.
Here’s a recent story:
The setup: it’s Black Friday week and the sales and deals are going gangbusters. We’ve worked all year building our audience on Facebook and Instagram for this very week. It’s the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and many MAJOR stores started their Black Friday pricing. We’re ready to rake in 5-figures in affiliate income this week alone! Maybe even today alone.
And then it happens.
Facebook is down. Instagram is down. All day.
We know some people are having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps. We’re working to resolve the issue as soon as possible.

So here we are: with an audience of approximately 50,000 ready-to-purchase consumers, and no way to reach them.
At least not via Facebook or Instagram.
Thankfully, we have also spent the year building our email lists. Yes, lists.
Here’s where the story takes a twist. We use ConvertKit to create, manage and make money from several email lists.
With ConvertKit’s software, we can segment our subscribers so they all receive exactly the kind of email content that interests them. We can also further segment those subscribers based on who takes action within emails. So, if someone clicks a lot of our links in emails with retail affiliate links, they might get put on a different list that we can send retail deals to more often.
This reduces people becoming irritated with your emails. You’re really sending the right content to the right people and most importantly, at the right frequency.
There are a ton of videos and tutorials on their site on how to use all of their features.
Having an email list is so essential because YOU are in control. You’re not relying on a social network, or at the mercy of algorithm updates. You have the email list. You can contact “your people” whenever you choose!
